2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month
11:30 AM
Approximately 75-90 minutes
Meet at the Sausalito Historical Society Ice House Museum
780 Bridgeway, Sausalito, CA
Experience the rich tapestry of Sausalito's history on a docent-led walking tour that delves into its intriguing past beyond its current reputation as an artist colony and tourist destination. Discover its origins as a center for maritime activities and shipbuilding as well as a critical freight, passenger and auto ferry transportation hub. Hear about where Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Wonder and Mariah Carey and others recorded best-selling albums. Learn how Sausalito evolved into a diverse bohemian counterculture community of artists, writers and musicians, and became home to gamblers, smugglers, and a famous San Francisco madam elected as Sausalito’s first female mayor.
Effective in August 2024, docent-led tours are scheduled every 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month, starting at 11:30 AM. The tour meets at the Sausalito Historical Society’s Ice House Museum, at Bridgeway and Bay Street, conveniently located near the ferry landing.
To ensure an intimate experience, tours are limited to 10 guests and require advance ticket purchase. Tickets are $10.
Participants should anticipate walking/standing outdoors approximately one mile. Dress for temperatures from 60-75°F. Plan for 90-minute parking. Tour is limited to 10 guests. The tour is wheelchair accessible.
Mike Moyle presents the “Legacy of the Portuguese in Sausalito”.
A great evening of fascinating information about the roles of the Portuguese in Sausalito and Southern Marin from Dairy Farmers to Fire Chiefs and more!
Additional Resources for the 7/9/24 Sausalito Portuguese Legacy Talk by Mike Moyle, IDESST Historian 10 July 2024
Thanks to those who were able to join us last night at the IDESST Sausalito Portuguese Cultural Center for my presentation about the legacy of the Portuguese community in Sausalito. Although my live presentation was not recorded, I have taped a version which is available on YouTube here: •
https://youtu.be/4FzrZDDawdU&t=0
In addition, here are recordings of three more recent presentations I have given which address related topics:
• Southern Marin's Portuguese Roots," Mill Valley Historical Society, March 1, 2023: https://youtu.be/EL0y5L6Q7M8?si=sAAB1DdIl1GD89rY
o Here is a list of additional resources prepared for that talk: https://bit.ly/49LgNyC
• "Marin's Dairy History," Marin History Museum, April 25, 2023: https://youtu.be/dFiUhTI2xiA?si=cG6MuUGr5CivN9ib
• "The New Portuguese Dairy Mural Wall on Tiburon and Southern Marin's Portuguese Dairy History," City of Tiburon, July 14, 2023: https://youtu.be/sWhT6XZhBp0?si=sGUilF_Tg2-qh-5j
In my talk last night about Sausalito's Portuguese legacy, I was only able to share stories about the eight individuals shown on the above cover slide, and only limited information about each of them. Needless to say, there have been so many more individuals of Portuguese descent who, over the years, have played important roles in the history of Southern Marin, and who also deserve to be recognized for their contributions.
Many of those individuals have been covered in materials I have prepared for the Center over the last ten years. Several are mentioned in the Guidebook for the Sausalito Portuguese Heritage Walking Tour (the 2 "Guidebook") that we created in 2014 (for a digital copy of the Guidebook, see https://bit.ly/3kyMBix). Over the intervening years, others have been discussed in the hundreds of posts about Sausalito's Portuguese heritage that we have shared on the Center's Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/idesst). This document provides links to some of that information.
Feel free to contact me with any questions about Sausalito's Portuguese history. Needless to say, we especially welcome inquiries and information about individuals of Portuguese descent who were connected with our community.
